We had two forges and anvils that face each other with three chests stacked on each other in the middle. When we went to delete one of the broke forge and anvils it deleted all three of the chests we had. They were filled with ingots, bars, lumps, armor parts, and armor that we had spent hours smelting. Is there something that can be done about this? We just lost a huge amount of resources and time.

When you destroy an object, other objects that are standing on the same tile can also be destroyed. So if you had chests on the same tile as Forge and Anvil at the moment of its destruction, they were destroyed along with it and there's nothing that can be done about it. Sorry for your loss.
