Few questions about farming

Post by Magneman » 24 Sep 2014, 07:59

Hi! I have a few questions about farming:

1) How long does it take for crops to grow, (i.e. carrots, peas)?
2) How long will it take before I see anything visible?
3) Who can harvest my crops? Can other people harvest them?
4) If other people are able to harvest my crops, how can I protect my crops from being harvested?
5) Do I need to flatten tiles to be able to plant seeds (flat ground)?

Thanks in advance! :D

1. Do not know how long BUT it seems there have to be 1 person near the seeds otherwise they're not processing.
2. Some ingame day's (at least 2 or 3)
3. Everyone :D
4. Stay there and kill them, build some defense
5. No but you have to plow the land

Oh and of course wheat is only for animals and not for you AFAIK

What I did:
I plowed a tile, then clicked farming -> plant peas/carrot.
It's been 12 hrs in real life, nothing visible. But the farming options on the plowed tiles aren't available anymore. Why can't I see anything? Is there something wrong with the tile/soil?

Edit: Do I need to water the tile, fertilize or something else?

I can only answer 1 and 2 with any experience...

1. Having been farming for just under 1 week, I have noticed it takes roughly 24 real life hours for your crops to become harvestable.
I'm not sure if anything alters this, such as weather, how fertile the land is etc. But every crop I've harvested has took 20-24 hours.

2. Seeing any visible changes to the crops happens around 10-14 hours... I've mainly been seeing changes 12 hours after sowing.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies. As to why I didn't see my crops growing: server probably crashed sometime between the two times I was playing, resulting in a freeze of the growth process. :D

Another question I have: How come in some tiles I get the option to plow, while in others I can't, but instead I can plant apple trees and mulberry trees?

Fertile Soil can be used as farm land.
Forest Soil can be used to plant trees.

Using a shovel you can move the soil around if you want. Pouring Forest Soil on top of any cell will let you plant a tree there for example.

1) It all depends on the growth settings on server. my server have 3x growth witch means it takes me 8 hours to fully grown harvest (24 hours with 1x).

2) I'm not 100% about this one but I think its when the crops are half way they become visible. so its for me 4 hours ( 12 hours if 1x)

3) Everyone can farm your harvest.

4) You can't claim land yet in this game so the only way to protect your crops is to make a wall or have friends or "friends" that have the ability to make the walls for you. if you run with the 600 skill points you can't do it yourself if your deep into the farming thing by now.

5) you dont need to flatten tiles, just plow them, after your first harvest you will se the soil is not ferztiled anymore. so you have 3 options here.
5.1) use the poop from your captured animals (chicken, hare)
5.2) Lower ground level by 1 to get new soil, its also "plowed" when you do this.
5.3) do the revese of 5.2 and drop new soil on top of the old. it will also be plowed.

Add. My favorite is to lower the ground level sense we're building a base and we need soil to flatten the ground inside the base complex. the soil from the farms are useless and is perfect for this.

Good luck farming :good:

Hmmm concerning the growth-time... aren't there TWO options affecting this?

I Thought default growth is in three days. So if your daycycle is 8h (4h day 4h night) it would result in 24h until you could harvest.

If your server shortens the daycycle (many don't want such long nights!), that shortens your growtime. I play on a server that cycles 1/1 hours, so I have to be there 6 hours after seeding :-/

But it seems there's a growth-modificator, too??? Would love to get my stuff after 24h ... that's a time I can regularly be online.

By the way - I like it realistically ... surely EVERYONE can get your stuff from the fields, as well as everyone can gather stone or soil...

Thanks for the input.
One more thing, regarding cooking: how do I lvl up cooking? Using a cooking pot on a campfire doesn't get my skill up.

seems you need animal lore before you can use the cooking-utilities and level it up... just look up the traits in the "L"-menu

Read that I can only lvl up cooking by making bread and cheese when getting from skill from to 0 to 30. Is this really the case? Because then I either need 1) a windmill for grinding flour, or 2) a stables with cows.

You can level up cooking by using a Big cauldron, Oven, or Kitchen.

Yes, I read that. But I also read somewhere that I could only lvl up cooking from 0 to 30 by making cheese and bread. Could someone confirm this?

the lvling cooking by only making bread/cheese isn't true

not sure if you can train cooking on a campfire I used a big cauldron to train (and start training) cooking, I started with fried beast (since because of a bug we can keep skinning this moose we killed).

just make sure you have a cooking pot (or a primitive one) equipped and select cooking->cook instead of farming -> prepare

if you don't have the cooking->cook option yet it means you still have to raise your animal lore and procuration (has to be 30 before unlocking the cooking skill)

also the grain isn't just for animals you can use a quern (to a non-native speaker as myself a windmill operated by hand ^^) to grind them into flour I think (no experience myself) you can build it under the construction material preparation skill (or one of you "friends" can)

As far as I know the Quern-stone/Windmill is bugged and can't be used, so no Flour.

Also there is no ways to get Milk yet because we can't get cows.

In short, don't think you can currently make bread or cheese at all.

But as Torxe explained, you can still raise your Cooking skill in other ways.

Can't trust the skill milestones texts too much right now.

But you don't gain cooking skill from making those meals?
That is weird. Does the meal actually get made?

Hello,

The "growth time" for field stuff is: 8*Growth time (take it from your server, standart: 3H)
It decays i think in about 2 ticks (standart 6).

about cooking:
You can skill it with the primitive cooking pot and a camp fire.
Just go for the "fried wild beast", plenty of skillpoints there for the start.

But since much stuff is missing (flout, honey, milk, different meats etc) you can do like 10 different recipes or so... thats it.

It is enough to stick with apples right now, besides RP reasons of course.

I dont think the "faster skilling" buff is implemented yet?

Best regards,

Ontrose

Any more news about the problem with Cooking and Skill 0.
I know more who have the same problem....
no matter what we do... Cooking stays at 0.
