Ok I have this issue atm....

I found Iron on the surface and made a furnace, but because I havent actually mined I cant melt it?

It just seems strange that I can get ore to melt and not get mining skill when tunneling.

If the only way to gain mining skill from hitting an ore tile under ground?

I never saw anything about mining rock for mining skill in the menu yet.

any hlep or suggestions would be great!

Anyhow I ended up with a bunch of iron ore I couldnt smelt because I didnt have mining after I built a smelter I think......

The whole thing just seems odd to me is all I built a smelter with out having smelting skill, but I cant smelt without having mining skill, bit I mined iron ore when tunneling I guess.

mining is only used to mine an ore vein, so you're stuck, sorry

Ok so you have to mine an Ore vein to gain mining skill under ground and not on the surface.

yes, once you habe 30 (should be doable with one vein at 2x skillgain) you unlock smelting and can finally smelt your ore

I'm having trouble figuring out how to dig a stinking tunnel. I keep swinging, but make no hole. Still seem to get plenty of rock though.

your are digging away approx 2m³ of rock

Just keep going it will break each tile varies how many hits.

OK, got all that. When I try to smelt though I get a message that I cannot make anything out of that (iron ore). I've tried large amounts, and a primitive crucible.

What do I need to smelt some ore?

Do you have the crucible equipped? Are you using the furnace correctly? This guide helped me a lot with that: http://lifeisfeudal.gamepedia.com/Smelting

Im having an issue where the furnace burns wood out before I can finish. Like 10 billets in a few secs. Nevermind, had to do with server setting

What do you mean server sttings?
Is it something that can get fixed?

I play on official server #5 and furnaces don't work there (or at least yesterday they didn't)
