So I just purchased Life Is Feudal: Your Own on Steam, just like 2 hours ago. And I found out there is another upcoming version of a improved LiF on the way, so I just managed to get a version of the game with less features?

No. This just means you have a free character slot to the LiF: MMO!

The MMO version won't come before late 2015 or even 2016 i heard.

It will be buy2play afaik, the free trial will be just like LiF: YO on a small island and the full MMO-land will require that you buy a character-slot.
And everyone who bought LiF: Your own, will have a character-slot for free there.

Do I have to buy it on steam to get the free char slot? It's 5 bucks cheaper on the official site.

You can buy from offical website or steam. It costs more on Steam because it is used to promote/advertise the game. So they take a cut.

You will get a steam key sent to you if you buy direct.

You will get a free character slot what ever one you purchase.
