You need:
iron
flux (requires alchemy)
Bloomery building (requires leather as far as I know)

what's the deal with leather? Can we not harvest it?

Last I checked there was a bug with the finished product (skins dipped In tanning tub) coming off the drying rack. So no leather until that gets fixed.
