How do I keep my stuff safe while I attempt to collect enough of it to actually build something?

Everything I drop on the ground dies before I can get what I need. It's annoying as hell.

It takes a while until you are able to build the first container (chest, crate, sack etc.). I have read somewhere that you can use a dead body to "store" items. Then they won't disappear, but they might be taken by other players.

I you are on your own server this might help. I have not tried it myself.
