How will gear decay / loss / repair work?

Post by Archaegeo » 20 Mar 2014, 14:30

I haven't seen it mentioned before, I might have overlooked it, but decay doesn't return a result on the wiki either....

How will gear decay/loss work?

I am hoping, since he wants an economic model like Eve's, that gear loss is the same, i.e. when you die, some of your items are damaged beyond repair, some are dropped lootable.

This removes items from the game.

Without removing items two things happen:

1) Eventually everyone has what they need, even if they get ganked, there is just more waiting.

2) Low level gear has no outlet/use. In Eve, even the starter frigates still have purpose and an economic presence, unlike in other games where no one wants to buy the sword a beginner crafter can make.

Anyone heard or have link to anything OFFICIAL <grin> about decay/loss?

I think Bobik said removal if left on the ground during server reset??

That would be one way if that's the case.

Yeah but that's totally preventable, need a method like Eve's death mechanic that removes stuff from play, or if you use decay like Wurm, then repairs need to only be doable by skill craftsmen.

If anyone an repair their item and keep it full QL, then you once more get the glut of items which crashes that economic tier and means only the "endgame" gear ends up mattering (Not that we have an endgame here, but there will be high QL end skill crafted items)

I think he wants to know how item degradation will work. WIll they repairable at a penalty to the overall quality? Will there be random breaks? WIll there be any reason to craft anything but the best gear? Darkfall had a problem with pointless armors. No one in their right mind would wear padded. So what happened is you would just craft a piece of armor until you could craft something that gave better xp for the production cost. Only when you became a master crafter would anyone besides brand new players be interested in your goods.

I believe the best system is a diminishing return when you repair. The weapon should suffer an overall quality penalty and the quality should be tied to damage or crit chance. This would encourage people to buy fresh weapons, and to sell their used gear to new players, or use for training/hunting.

I'm pretty sure you won't have to worry about your gear though AFTER you die because it will probably be in someone else's inventory.

Right, but it could be random for each piece of gear, aka Eve, if it breaks or drops on death.

That makes a market.

True you could have total failure, but this is not a ship blowing up! :pardon:

No, its armor getting beaten on by large mauls and two handed swords.

If its beaten badly enough that you die (it failed to protect you) then some of it might be destroyed in the process (since we have body hit areas, it could be the areas that were hit).

Plus who knows what broke in your backpack in full combat :)

UO system was one of the best.

Each piece of gear looses durability when being hit or striked.
If durability reaches 0, item disappears.
Each repair decreases max durability by a few points.
Item's properties drop by the durability/max_durability coefficient.

This is perfect for a player driven economy and the most realistic system.

Nod, repair reducing max QL with no way to raise max QL would work as well.
