quick question.

Are cities intended to be a mixture of small factions such as civilians, rebels and the local military power or as the stronghold of a select faction? Also, Is it even possible?

It will be up to claim holders to decide and manage these issues thru negotiations with different groups.

With the guild claim system, guilds will be able to lodge in their cities people that are not in their guild, but still have power over them because they can just destroy the guy's personnal claim inside their city. But I don't think there will be much "rebels", or the city needs to be huge, which is unlikely.

When a band of players that is 10+ in size they can claim land and become a guild. Where this guild monument is place becomes the city which is protected from attacks and unwelcome players. The guild can also claim land outside of the city, but it is only claimed in the sense that no one else can plant a personal claim with out the permission of the guild. Think of it as an urban and sub-urban areas. I am not positive, but I think that one can build in the sub urban area, just not claim it as their own protected area without permission.

If that is so, it is possible that a large city might have small camps near it as access to trade or protection and perhaps "rebels" could hold up in this area.

Urban Is where I was thinking. but what is sub-urban? Surely the center of the city is what they own and urban to sub-urban is just where people live in a semi-protected state?

For example. Take my basic setup/idea for the actual city for the duchy of Tirmani. It has the duke's palace ( Center of city, controlled by the guild ), the land and potential buildings inside the walls ( Urban ) and the farmland etc. outside the walls(sub-urban) . Surely rebels/general lowlife could spring up inside the walls. Not to a large scale but small bands.

I agree that any rebel force large enough to take the castle would have to exist in the sub-urban areas. same for a band of highwaymen. But Small rebel groups that fight in the alleyways or bands of pickpockets could and (in real life) Would exist in the Urban area.

Hm, we've seen 500 member clans from other sandbox MMO's, actually. It really depends on the MMO server's limitations. I personally was planning on building a metropolis for my guild. Weren't you? :P When in Rome...

Yeah I want to design tons of stuff for the city I live in. I already have plans for a barracks with a guard post, sparring grounds. Some of it already built in MC as a guideline. I swear, if possible. The barracks of the guild I want to work In I plan to be my masterpiece. 8-)
