If you do not have crucible and tongs equipped when melting the flux and iron, the game will still use your flux and iron but will not give you steel. Plus only steel ignot can be made in a bloomery and the steel bars and lumps can be made on a anvil/forge. I'm sure this has been said before but just as a warning for any other players.
