Just went to web site (http://lifeisfeudal.com/LiFYO) and purchased the game. The link at the bottom of that page opened up a Humble Bundle widget to pay and I got the humble bundle email with link, which then takes me to a "Click the button to redeem on Steam" page.

I read the website list of game requirements and never saw anything about steam account requirements or that this is a steam only game. So 1st question: Do I have to have a steam account to download the game and play? Second question: if not how to play without steam?

Yeah it's indeed not listed in the page you read, it's only under the FAQ section.

A: Life is Feudal: Your Own has already launched in Early Access on Steam on 19.09.2014.
Life is Feudal: MMO beta will hopefully start somewhere around Fall/Winter 2015.

A: You can purchase Life is Feudal: Your Own either directly from our website or from the Steam store.
