Personally I only like lore in games that directly affect the game itself and what happens in the game, take 2 opposites, in Wurm the lore would affect the core aspect of the game-play with things like the faith and the religions etc, and transferring from the care-bear server to the pvp server in wurm would also have lore and story based behind it too.

On the other hand in Darkfall for example Lore doesn't affect the game at all really, I'll give another example (but a bad one :P ) League of Legends has a lot of lore to do with every hero but it doesn't affect the game in any way. But obviously it's not the same type of game at all as LiF.

Well, first of all we will publish a background or prehistory lore, to answer basic players question: Who are we? Where we came from? What is that continent? and so on. But i think that wwe can also keep a lore-like chronicles of real ingame events to keep a track of server history. Background history should appear soon.

If I were you I wouldn't put too much effort or time into the lore, at least not in the games early stages. Since this is a game that takes place in medieval times I'd like to see lore that contains historical aspects rather than just fictional lore. Maybe a mix of them both might be cool. :)

Do you guys have any information floating around in your design doc about Lore? I guess I'd like to get a sense of it being more historically based, but fantasy in terms of the actual world itself? Or are you going full on fantasy with made up kingdoms, ethnicities, etc?

I generally find that games go in two polar opposite directions either going with an overabundance of lore that leaves not much room for player creativity or giving bare bones and making the community make up everything.

I should probably qualify my comments. I meant fantasy as in non-fiction, not gay elves and fairies or anything. I probably should have said low-fantasy or alternate history as in are we in medieval England or a fictional country, but with historically accurate weapons, terminology, etc.

Well you may can refer to Gothic Game - which has kinda a serious fantasy setting.

But as far as I know it all should avoid fantasy and takes much reference to the accurate history of the medieval time

I would love it to let the players create their own lore.
Player-driven lore is nothing out of the player base reach.

Currently we're polishing our main prehistory lore. We will publish a small chunk of text, just to provide a major vector/bounds for futher lore writing. And i don't mind about forum members to join and add their own stories, details to our lore background.

Mhm player chronicles of ingame events is awesome, and also with Alpha, closed beta and open beta stages should have different times in the history of the game in general so that new players can read how it was "back then" and stuff.

Also ingame lore is a must too, just sayin ;D

Ohh no, The bad man made his way over already. I think the Mortal Community is ready to claim these forums already.

Just in to say I love lore, and I'm all for supporting more lore, certainly adds another depth to the game, and it's good for those intrested, whislt the others can just ignore it. Though I'm imagining some people writing their own lore like: " and then the giant p*nis-shaped man came from his strange metallic husk that fell from the heavens, spilling his milk all over the cobblestones that covered the streets..." Or something else that is entierly rediculous or unbelievable and just plain fantasy.

This game is high fantasy in the literary sense (being set in it's own world) and low fantasy in the gaming sense (closer to realism than mythical.)

However it is fantasy unless any of you have been magically teleported home by praying IRL?

Anyway I agree with those saying little paid dev time should be spent on the lore right now. I'd encourage them to let some of the more solid contributers in the RP community build some of the lore though. Thats a pretty cost effective method and it should actually REALLY please the people who care about lore most if they know they can help shape the lore by contributing really solid stuff.
