I just started but I think I may have a bug because no matter what I eat (tried apples, fish, the cookies) nothing refills my hunger meter.

Tried this on a hosted server and private server. So not sure what I can do to fix this. I want to play the game but I'll just end up starving.

Wow, have not heard of this happening... Did you try to reinstall the game(or just repair)? I know kinda lame, but it seems maybe it is client side...
