So this is a nifty trick I use to get night vision in the game. I've been sharing it with people I know but I thought I'd share it here for fun .

Devs can fix this if they want to, but I'll leave it to them to classify it as a bug or not.

1) Make your map huge (the size of your screen)
2) Increase the transparency of the map so you can see through it.
3) zoom all the way out so the island is about the size of your character's head.

At night you'll notice you can see quite a bit better if you do this and can still attack. The only thing that's annoying is interacting with GUI elements since the map is on top.

This the best method for night vision that I'm aware of since it compliments all other methods. Don't knock it till you try it
