My point was to lower the range of difference between weapons of the same quality/style. No one in any MMO (except bads) chooses their gear by "play style" they choose it by mathematical proof that one is better then the other. If you put in the option of modifying "1hand sword a" several different ways one will mathematically be better in the majority of combat situations, leaving the other options pointless and a waste of time to code into the game. If your preferred play style is to use weapons that swing faster, choose a smaller weapon that has lower weapon speed.

I agree with finalreview and I would like to add that customized weaponry should cost realy much, there weren't that much people who were running around with decorated swords, axes,... the same for armour. For armour I would like to mention that I hope to see that plate armour and other kinds of very expensive armours will not be common. I hate those fantasy games were everybody is fighting in plate armour. So it should only be affordable for the very, very rich people (for example the leaders of clan/guild/city/...), maybe with the financial support of their disciples.

Great idea bergheer, adds another realism factor to the game. There could be some small, simple changes that wouldn't be expensive, but also some beautiful intricate designs. Wearing highly customized ornate armor in real life didn't change your ability to kill, just your oooooooooo and ahhhhhhhhhhh factor :)

I am trying to remember weren't court daggers often not very sharp or useful to protect the person who possesed them?

Do you mean ceremonial daggers worn in some type of noble court? I know that plate armor was not overly stylized, and if it was it was, then it was used in as ceremonial show armor. Usually only worn by kings, rich nobles, and other cultural icons, not common soldiers.

Lets not forget that most people aren't going to be wearing plate armor. For the most part your gonna see people rolling about in padded or hide armor, so modifying the look could also add to utility. Like adding long shaggy bits to help you blend in with long grass and bushes, and don't forget ye olde swashbuckler style of padded armor. Or perhaps having hide armor that can be decorated with kill trophys, like bear heads, or stag antlers. Stuff like that.

I think tabards and tunics with the guild emblem/motif/colours should be a definite yes, however i agree entirely with finalreview about the stats of the weapons, and the customizing of weapons should be limited, if LIF is going to be a realistic game then the designs of your sword and the such should be reflective of what actually existed in the said time-frame. Bergheer also brought up a good point about the plate armour aspect of the game, variations of chain/leather etc should be the norm for the majority of standard players, and plate armour available to those in high places, as it was realistically ;)

Customized Weaponary

Not sure if any of this can actually be feasibly programmed but here is my two cents.

If your going for realism, then changing the stats of a weapon when customizing it is realistic, the only time a sword is equal to another sword is when they are identical, if one sword has a thicker blade than the other, then it is going to cut and swing differently, this concept applies to all weapons, now, I do agree you shouldn't be able to make a sword's speed match that of a dagger's, but if your going to take away the ability to change a weapon's cut/swing/balance/guard then you might as well not have it be crafted, sword smiths as well as every other artisan, spend their lives developing their style within their craft, if you were to look at one sword smith's sword, pick one up, swing it, and test it, then go to another sword smith and try their sword, the two swords would be completely different in almost every way.

Changing a weapon doesn't necessarily make one person more likely to win, a good sword in an amateur's hands might as well be a stick, that's where the player's skill and the character's skills come into it, have a basic weapon that is your middle ground which every weapon smith can make, then allow the artisan to be able to make changes to it, now if your afraid your going to end up finding the ultimate godly weapon that has max balance, cut, swing, and guard, then personally Id like the know the genius who accomplished it, because by adding something you take away something.

As for the plate, kings, nobles/knights, and usually officers as well as heavy cavalry, wore full plate (not all officers were noble just most)
so I agree plate shouldn't be worn by the normal foot soldier, but it shouldn't be rare either.

Now on a different note, I believe armor should be able to have stat shifts as well, you have your basic cloth, padded, leather, chain, scale and plate armor, then the artisan can take it and make adjustments to it, say for instance they add plate to the shield arm on the chain armor, or add extra padding, or with plate, make the sword arm plate thinner and lighter and make the chest plate or shield arm thicker, and then of course you have your different styles/colors/decorations you can add.

This way your not taking away from the crafting aspect of the game, and you also add a personalized style that each artisan eventually has.
