Right now I'm playing Eve.

But I've played hardcore MMOs like Shadowbane, Darkfall, and Permadeath MUDs.

Hi LiF people, I am Venciera,

I would suggest playing Rust. It's hardcore, and lot of fun. :)

There is such thread in the Offtopic branch. Don't bring the flood here, folks.
Thank you :)

Our guild has been playing Moutn and Blade Warband PW mod to get back into the practice of using formations and it's the closest thing to the combat system out right now.

Come try out Wurm online, its a bit like LIF but when LIF is out im pretty sure it will take the life from Wurm. I hope LIF does not make the same mistakes Wurm and many other games have made by not trying changes.

I have a group in wurm on chaos, to which im sure a good half dozen of us will be looking at LIF once its out.

I've been playing:

- Breaking Point (ArmA 3 mod)
- Day Z (standalone)
- Rust

I love me some sandbox survival... for medieval era I have the following installed and play:

- Mount and Blade (Regular, Warband, and Fire and Sword)
- War of the Roses (probably the best of the era for combat)
- Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

It actually seems to be a quite popular opinion. Maybe it's just us die-hard Warband-players who think otherwise :D

You level your char, its persistant, you customise your skills and gear. There's also a multiplayer campign called "Strategus" which clans fight on browser based game. Only wars are taken place in game.

Salem is practically relaunching soon. Has alot of similarities to LiF, aswell as alot of differences.

but yeah if you haven't played a real sandbox mmo yet, you might wanna check that out, might be this week.

Because I think people who have only played mmos where you progress by killing monsters or completeing quests, will be in for a shock. which includes games like darkfall.

Salem was poop, tell em to go play Haven & Hearth, you know as well as any of us that H&H trumps Salem. Not only that but LiF and H&H are like mirror images of one another, with of course the exception of isometric view/3rd person.(there are some differences here and there, but these games are nearly one in the same)

I wouldnt say its a requirement to play, but it will certainly give you an idea of what to expect in LiF and i certainly recommend it.

If people havent realized it from the dev stream(im sure they havent) half the place holders in the game are from H&H lol.

you arent going to learn anything from Chivalry that will help you in this game lol. You are better off playing warband or *shudders* war of the roses/vikings. The attacking and blocking will be very similar to those, and will support you far greater then the game mechanics of chivalry, which is just one button click timing based.

Salem is basically the commercialized carebear-version of H&H.

Although every playthrough of H&H winds up with you getting horrendously murdered by someone and your place utterly trashed I keep coming back to the game. In fact, one of my favourite pass-times in that game is writing tombstones.

I too would recommend to play H&H to get a feel of the crafting and building. Keep in mind though that LiF fortunately will be a little more forgiving when you are killed by the first stranger you meet.

I would love this thread to be moved to offtopic section as already mentioned previously, but I'll take the opportunity and add my 2 thalers:

Wurm Online. You can play this game to test if you'd like LiF. Yes, it is very similar to LiF (minus combat, which is terrible).

Xsyon. Like Wurm, just worse - no motivation to play when you are done with your first house.

Mortal Online. This was supposed to be great game, unfortunately with no documentation and full of bugs. Still, you may spend some nice time there.

Darkfall. Havent played that one yet, but there is a lot of positive reviews about it. Focuses on PVP.

I resubbed to darkfall for latest patch, its fun. its not a sandbox like LiF is tho.

I dont want to get into a discussion which is the better, haven or salem, at all. I only want to point out the above quote is completely untrue.

For better or for worse salem is actually more hardcore and punishing than haven overall. it is 100% permadeath (unlike haven) and walls don't keep you nearly as safe.

but I encourage people to try both games. they are very similar but also very different. I enjoy certain aspects of both.

I'm currently playing in the closed beta of the Shadowbane Emulator project. I think there's a good chance that they enter open beta this spring so it may behoove some folks to come check out one of the games that is going to be inspiration behind this games PVP.

I just downloaded that last night, I think that I'll like it but the learning curve seems pretty steep. I threw myself into it without touching the tutorial though.

Very well. Only played a bit of beta. Hated it. Guess Im an old H&H fanatic.

Heard that they got kicked out by Paradox and took the time to rework a lot of the stuff. Sounds like all is for the better. My bad to bash.

Salem has just been wiped and consolidated to one server. I like it. It's kind of like LiF will be, but with a worse engine and fewer features.
