What sort of castles will you build upon release?

Personally i'll build a wood palisade/stone motte and bailey, like Sandal castle. :D

A Circular castle with a keep inside a city. The city being on Un-protected land. This would be If I was controlling the construction.

OOOOOOH yes....
I like the look of thy castle...
Personally, I plan on building an island city (think Venice) with a large keep (like the one in Rhino's demo) inside on hill to repel attackers.

We'll need red brick castles to get the right Hanseatic feel for the Ordo Teutonicus :)

I wanted to make a star shaped kind of castle. Will probably start with a small wooden fort first to see if its actually effective.

The corners will be towers of course

I think the star fort style was picked up during the hayday of the gunpowder era, made for fighting with weapons which had flat trajectories (Gunpowder weapons) Since, due to the lack of roofs or hoardings on the walls and towers, if any weapons which arced their projectiles (arrows, crossbows, slings ect) could drop their shots down on the defenders heads with rather relative ease.

This is correct - It is not a medieval feature, and the shape is especially designet for cannon defence. Long rangers and mortars on the long sides, and on the short sides, cannons which were intended to maim and dismember infantry who had reached the main walls.

Youre talking about how the walls themselves were built which was resist against mortars and to accomodate musket infantry . Youre thinking too hard about the concept of the layout which was just a series of improving designs to give a full arc of fire on the enemy from every angle.

I'm going to design forts purely with defense and economic efficiency in mind. I've no need for pretty castles if they're not functional in a siege. Life is Feudal: I'll design my castle to play the feudal role of defending our local economic assets, and workers.

All that being said, If I can make it sexy in the process, thats cool too 8-) .

Maybe you should think about incorporating a port or some place for fishing and docking boats.

Of course, If I'm settled near the coast, or on the coast or river. There is a good chance I could be up in the mountains, or grasslands, or a desert oasis, for which there would be no need.
