Cloaks

A full covering cloak that can be worn over armor to hide your name. Or just a cloak in general. Or maybe any armor under plate. because plate+cloak=op.

Like the Nazgul, you mean? I can imagine that but it should look different from being cloaked without wearing armor beneath it.

About hiding your name... I don't know. I take it you want it to be a disguised mode to roleplay a thief or an assassin but if the guy is part of a faction I'm in war with, I would need to know.

Or maybe cloaked persons were KOS (kill on sight) anyway because of their shady appearance.

Just don't get to close to your target, and your name wont show ;-)

I would be allot less suspicious towards a char in normal clothes - than a mysterious cloaked person.

Especially if I could not see the name - so it would really work against your purpose.

Blending in to your environment - and looking as you fit into the scene is allot better, to not draw unwanted attention.

Just a thought out of personal reference. :)

Well, it's meant to look suspicious. In the case I constructed you wouldn't lose alignment (or not much) when murdering people dressed up like that since it can be considered RP.
I certainly don't want the everyday normal guy to kill me and come away with it.

I do get what you say, and I love playing a assassin, rogue or thief in games with roles based on such mechanics. But all though this is not a historical accurate game - having cloaks that alter stats, hide your name and where you can silently kill as a mechanic quickly turns to becoming close to magic to me personally ...

If you learn the game well, invest time on your character and train yourself and play the right way you can clearly acomplish all of the above and mentioned things without the game having to offer it as a mechanic... It comes down to your own skill and creativity.

I must say, I'm sorta in favor of hiding player names by default. I think people in your guild should be known to you, if you're in war there should be other things that tell you who is friend or foe than the names in different colors.
And if you meet someone on the streets there could be an option to reveal your name to him (sorta like a friend system).

On this part I agree with you Siegbert :)

But it kind of would mean a "re-write" on some parts of the system, such as how would you discover a trespasser and so on in a town

EDIT**
On a side note though - the names show up so late when you meet someone, that it really is much like it is not there - as you would probably have a hard time getting away if you are surprised by a few thugs...

Why would you need his name? He is flagged as criminal so you know you can kill him. I'm just not sure how this flagging will turn out, yet... In Mortal Online when you aim at a player you see a colored shield in the upper right corner. If it's red it's a criminal, if it's grey you're free to kill him without getting flagged yourself, green is neutral.

On a side note though - the names show up so late when you meet someone, that it really is much like it is not there - as you would probably have a hard time getting away if you are surprised by a few thugs...

Names should just not play that much of a role anyway. I don't want to look at text all the time to know what to do. I find it weird every time I watch some PvP gameplay of Mortal Online. People have to check every players name first to know if he's friend or foe and then engage him. It should be instantly obvious just by looking at the guy.

Name tags should not be in LiF at all. That way, it's not just "Oh, he's an enemy, bash his head in." You would actually have to be tactical and try and figure out who he is by appearance, (maybe a guild symbol or a recognizable face) what he says, what he has with him and how he's acting. This would make deception and spying all the better, as well as battles. So please, no name tags or any other stats above player heads.

Also, the point of a cloak is to hide your appearance and face, while also making you blend in with darkness, right? Well I think that if a cloak is craftable in-game, it should be totally visual. Just imagine, in a narrow castle hallway at night, a cloaked figure approaches a guard. The guard doesn't see him coming; the black cloak gives the intruder an almost invisible appearance in the dark. The cloaked figure quickly dispatches the guard, and the guard has no idea who it was, because of the cloak hiding his face, and he has no name tag. And as Siegbert and Flannery already said, cloaked people would be all the more suspicious, so there would be a risk of putting one on.

That is simply not viable in a war situation. You have to know who's friend and who's foe the second you see him.
I think best would be that everybody would have to wear a little piece of cloth in your faction's color.

In Persistent World Mod for Warband you'll wear a colored cap by default. You can however get rid of it which is a shame. You than need to turn of name tags which clutters the screen to a high degree.

I definitely agree it would have been a good idea to have some sort of color showing the stance of the char when you click on him/her, instead of the name - If you are looking at a more realistic game world.

But we are not looking at a totally realistic world - and I am only referring to what has already been stated by the Dev's on the subject, as it seems they are not going to change this feature.

But again... Lets show the OP some respect and lets leave the subject of name tags, or create a new thread with that subject - as the subject here was first of all about cloaks.... ;)

Totally agree with you. What I meant was, if a situation arose where there was a person who you didn't know, those are some possible things you could try. Probably shouldn't be mandatory to wear the cloth, but you could get it from your guild and it would be smart to wear, unless you're in enemy territory.

Of course.

Going back to cloaks, I do wonder what would happen if my cloak idea was implemented. I'm just starting to think that maybe some people would use cloaks all the time if it was like that, or if the risk of being suspicious would be enough to not use them.

How about cloaks hide your name till you get to a certain distance with someone, like a shorter distance than what it is without one.

Even if someone looks suspicious why be paranoid and have to figure out who they are? maybe your better off leaving them be anyways. Or.... Maybe not. ;) Makes things interesting imo.

why you should cover your armor
-hide from weather
-nice visual effects and roleplay
-hiding your armor, so opponent doesn´t know what armor you have
-hide small weapons(one handed+buckler)

This. But with no friend/foe thing and instead your faction can put posters of enemies. You'll know if they're the enemy if they're escorting the enemy pay wagon!
