Just a few ideas to throw out there,

Asteron, Astora, Asteros, Astera, Attera, Ateros,

Or you could combine names like some games do: Middle-Earth
Terra-Austerius

Keep in mind that most places have adopted names, whether earned justly or not, from the people as well. I imagine those of the Old Lands who spend their lives in a war ravaged land look at this distant unfamiliar world as Paradise. Sometimes when things are bad we imagine other places much better than they actually might be. Here are some nicknames to go along.

The Promised Land, The Land of Plenty, The World of Promises, The Land of Dreams, The Gift, The Gift of Asterius. The dream across the sea. The Fabled Lands.

I would find a game that i have that is 20 years old and use the nemes from it. modified a bit of course.

Or use normal name but change them into latin or some dialec that hardly no one uses.

Prehistory. Looking for a continent name!

Post by Red » 24 Dec 2012, 04:44

My 2 cents.

Keep it simple whatever it is, even perhaps leave it nameless.

The problem with creating a name that has some sort of basis is that you could potentially steer the lore of the game in the direction of that name (which isn't always a bad thing, just something to keep in mine.) I personally would rather the game naturally create its own personal lore.

But, my first and I believe to be a strong suggestion based upon your lore that I don't think many here actually read, is
Asteria
Named after the assassinated king who was so enthralled with the "new lands".
Lore wise its a pretty snug fit :)

'The Land' or 'The Land of Men' could be what the locals call all of the continent.
Then referring to northlands, southlands..etc., icelands, wetlands, The Land of Sands. which refer to local provinces or areas.

I think if the name becomes to fantasized it might lose its flare as feudal mmo.

I very much agree with this. I love the idea of simply names places. Named in such a way that the players imagination can build it's own image of what that place looks like.
Fantasy names can take too much power away from the player.

I have a suggestion, I don't want to sound harsh but maybe you shouldn't give a prefixed name for the continent, instead of this you should let the players call the land whatever they decide to call it trough the course of the game?

I second this. Lot of people are creating different guilds, with various themes (nordic, western european, religious) and I think it fits the game better when diferent types of people use different names.

I'm echoing this position as well.

I definitely agree. This is the extent to which places should be named in my opinion.

I'm not big on anything that dictates what anything is to me. This already has the potential to be my dream game.

I would say just call it the New World or nothing at all and let it be named what the players will name it.

Otherwise I don't really care a names a name. I'm only going to care about peoples kingdoms and realms.

I believe that current name really is a soul of that game and describes it perfectly, no changes needed.

I would suggest
Terra vetus
Terrae veteris

vetus -eris superl. veterrimus; [old , ancient, of long standing; experienced]. M. pl. as subst. [the ancients].

terra -ae f. [earth , land, ground, soil; a country, land, region]; 'orbis terrarum', [the whole world].

I agree with the idea that the new continent has no "official" name.

Let the players refer to it as they will in game, and whatever sticks, sticks.

I too agree with the notion that the players are the ones creating the history from the time the game goes live. There should certainly be some sort of history that explains why the world is up for grabs, but then once the players take hold, we should be free to name the lands we inhabit.

Since there will be a lot of stone cutting (to make mines and search for ore) and woods chopping and other vastness of manual labor i suggest a simple name. And i also saw some guys saying "make it russian plz!!!". So here it is:

Welcome to the continent GULAG! :D

Ofc no disrespect and trolling. Its a proper suggestion. We always wanted to send our foes in cRPG to cut some stone somewhere and we used to tell them they would be sent to gulag. ;)

Excuse me, but what is the name of the land now - LiF? And if the other server is created - LIF 2? I think that the name should be the name the girl by the hand and heart (land), which led many men to prove that someone is one of them deserves to be her king.

Novaria

Nov = Latin for "new"

Aria = a song that is played as the background over which lyrics will be sung.

This name reflects the struggle, success, victory, and defeat that are yet to be experienced.

The music has started, but the words have not been sung.

Since this new continent is west of the empire it could be named Occidenia, which means "Land of the setting sun"

Telurvus

Might not be the greatest name in the world, but its interesting what can happen and what you find out when you create names. :)

Tel was taken from the word Tellus

In ancient Roman religion and myth, Tellus or Terra Mater ("Mother Earth") is a goddess of the earth. Although Tellus and Terra are hardly distinguishable during the Imperial era...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_(mythology)

Urvus was taken from this..

Rome is also called the "Urbs", the word that in later Latin generically referred to any town or city. "Urbs" may ultimately have come from "urvus", the furrow cut by a plough, in this case, by that of Romulus.[citation needed]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Founding_of_Rome

I came up with the name doing some searches about old world languages and meanings about what i read in the lore, land, names, etc...then used all the words i had listed and combined a few to make different words from those and choose this one.

Go ahead search Google for Telurvus.

What is interesting is when I search for this word only one thing comes up..I was like Wow! :Search:

The book has translated words for the poems listed.

Boris Leonidovich Pasternak (1890-1960)
http://www.jame-ghor.com/archive/sher/s ... ahmadi.pdf

The poem has the words "k telu rvus'" Which I guess means- all my being sways?

http://lovepoetry.com.ua/translit/russk ... a.mp3.9459

English translation - http://www.poemhunter.com/best-poems/bo ... gdalene-i/

I don't know if its called Magdalina or Magdalene as those are two names for the same thing.

It gets even more interesting the more I read.

More seriously I think a name taken from European / Nordic mythology would be fitting. :)
